Students on the 2026 California High School Summer Program

With their second day of classes behind them, California High School Summer Program students made their way to the athletic field to enjoy an afternoon full of recreation and relaxation. Some students played rounds of spikeball, while others tapped into their artistic side at the arts table with prefect Maddie Brittain (’28). Others, still, showed off their competitive side, dribbling on the soccer field and hitting up the volleyball courts. One last group really took relaxation to heart, soaking up the afternoon sun by the pool. At the art table, Reagan R. painted a beautiful watercolor picture of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel!

The afternoon’s recreation worked up some big appetites, and all headed to dinner with enthusiasm. Then, it was off to the library for study hall, as the next day bore discussions of Genesis and the first class on Euclid! Today, programmers will tackle Euclid’s definitions, postulates, and common notions, which will lay the groundwork for the propositions that await them later this week.

Studying hard

Following a productive and leisurely time of study, the students said an evening Rosary in the Chapel before making their way to St. Cecelia Hall. There, Admissions counselors Max Alvarez (’26) and Rose Anderson (’26) led the first dance practice of the program! Students stepped, swung, and twirled as Max and Rose guided them through the different dance moves. St. Cecelia’s was full of lively chit-chat and music as students switched partners and, by the end of the hour, saw marked improvement. They will get the chance to put their new dance skills to the test at the closing dance on the last night of the program.

Dancing

Having danced their hearts out, students raced back to the residence halls for an early curfew, where exciting dorm games awaited them. Bonfires blazed, and all toasted marshmallows and devoured s’mores.

In the women’s hall, a giant game of dodgeball ensued, with each wing facing off against the other. Then the night’s snack arrived: taquitos and salsa. The common room of St. Monica Hall was crowded as girls danced and sang at the top of their lungs. Piñatas were the pinnacle of the night, as each took turns cracking them open. They were shocked to discover, though, upon breaking open the first, that it was full of carrots! Then a surprise piñata was brought out, containing an abundance of candy, which rained down to excited cheers.

Indoor Bonfires

The party continued until it was time for students to retire. They said goodnight with anticipation of the next day’s discussions on Genesis and Euclid. This afternoon’s Summer Blog post will contain a full report on those academics, as well as Monday’s section and group photos. You won’t want to miss it!
