Students on the 2026 California High School Summer Program

This morning, students on the California High School Great Books Program returned to the classroom, starting their day with demonstrations of Propositions , , and from Book I of Euclid's Elements

Many students took the morning at a slower pace, catching up on some well-deserved sleep after last night’s festivities. Students reviewed the morning’s propositions over a warm breakfast, then returned to St. Gladys Hall to showcase their growing knack for geometry. Today’s propositions proved core theorems of the relationship between straight lines and angles, and students exceled when called upon to go to the blackboard. “I got to demonstrate on the board something that I thought of for myself,” Parker J. shared after class. “It was really cool!”

Midday Mass was well attended, and all gathered in St. Joseph’s Commons afterward for a tasty lunch of pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw, and fries.

Studies resumed in the classrooms at 1:00 p.m. for a discussion of Blaise Pascal’s ʱԲé. This 17th-century mathematician and philosopher argues that man cannot know for certain the nature of God or whether He exists. Thus, Pascal offers a wager: despite the lack of reasonable proof, belief in the existence of God is still man’s most rational choice. With the potential reward of an eternity in Heaven, what does man have to lose? “I agree with most of his arguments,” Anna L. reflected before class. “There is one I’m still not sold on, but I’m excited to get there.”

After class, students returned to recreation before dinner. Tomorrow morning, the Summer Program Blog will have the rundown on how they spend that time, as well as all the highlights from tonight’s soccer championship!
