Banquet

Upon making themselves at home after yesterday’s arrival, students on the California Summer Program and their families gathered on the lawn in front of Sts. Peter and Paul Hall for a barbeque picnic. Programmers chose between tri-tip, grilled chicken, or hot dogs, complemented by baked beans, potato salad, watermelon, and chocolate-chip cookies. Exchanging greetings over the meal, the students continued to get to know one another, and many litte brothers and sisters could be seen running around, cookies in hand, enjoying their visit to 51 just as much as their older siblings.

A Traveler’s Mass followed the picnic, after which students said goodbyes to their families and made their way to St. Cecilia’s Hall, where Jon Daly, executive director of admissions, and the entire prefect team were waiting to give them a warm welcome.

Happy people

Mr. Daly began the proceedings by taking roll and thanking all 120 students for attending, going over schedules and expectations, and offering resources to anyone who might need them. Prefect Anthony Santine (’25) then introduced his fellow teammates with funny personal anecdotes about each one, inciting lots of laughter at some of the outrageous stories. Finally, Mr. Daly introduced the Summer Program chaplain Rev. Sebastain Walshe, O.Praem. (’94), who encouraged the students to take advantage of the near constant availability of the sacraments offered daily in the Chapel, emphasizing his role as “spiritual father” for the next two weeks of the program.

The evening concluded with an ice-cream social for prefects and students in their respective residential halls, allowing all to continue to get to know each other as they mingled in the courtyards and common rooms. Then, it was off to bed, as the programmers eagerly awaited their first full day of the program.
