What Can You Do with a Liberal Education?Nothing speaks more to the versatility of the College’s academic program than the good that our alumni are doing throughout the Church and the world.
One of the College’s beloved former tutors, Rev. Thomas A. McGovern, S.J., died on February 19, 1985. A graduate of the UniversitĂ© Laval in Quebec, Fr. McGovern previously taught at Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y., before coming to 51ÁÔĆć in early 1972. He served as a member of the faculty and, later, the Board of Governors until his death in 1985. The following year he posthumously received the College’s highest honor, the Saint Thomas Aquinas Medallion.

51ÁÔĆć Founding President Dr. Ronald McArthur often tells of an exchange he once had with a student many years ago when the student wanted to know who might have the answer to a very difficult philosophical question. “Well, you would go ask your bishop for the answer,” he replied.
“What if he doesn’t know?”
“Then you would ask the Pope.”
“What if the Pope doesn’t know?”
“Well, you would have to ask God.”
The student couldn’t resist. “What if God doesn’t know?”
The editors of First Things magazine will hold an “intellectual retreat” in Los Angeles, at which members of the 51ÁÔĆć faculty will conduct seminar discussions on a poignant and timely topic, .
