An Evening of Reflection
As soon as they wrapped up Thursday’s classes on Euclid and Genesis, students on the California High School Summer Program dove right into the afternoon’s recreation period. For some, that meant painting, sketching, or playing cards, but for most it meant the highly anticipated volleyball tournament. Programmers and prefects played hard, passing and spiking the ball over the net, and in the end, all had an engaging afternoon!
Dinner looked a little different last night, as, rather than eating inside St. Joseph Commons, programmers dined outside at a barbeque prepared by prefect Luke Connelly (’27). They gathered in groups on picnic blankets, overlooking Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel, delighting in a classic American meal of smoked brisket, mac & cheese, bread, and watermelon.
They next proceeded to St. Bernardine of Siena Library for the final study hall of the program. Students practiced the last of their Euclidean propositions of the week and read passages from J. Henri Fabre and St. Thomas Aquinas in preparation for Friday afternoon’s class.
It was then time for Philosophy and Theology on Tap! Throughout the program, students have had the opportunity to ask questions on any subject — life, morality, theology — which they wrote down and placed in a box for this occasion. Program Chaplain Rev. Andrew DeSilva (’03) answered the students’ pressing theological questions, while tutor Dr. John Finley and College President Paul O’Reilly tackled the philosophical ones, all providing the students with careful, well-formed answers to their queries.
The night then took on a more contemplative tone, as students made their way to the Chapel for Adoration, confession, and the Rosary. A choir of prefects and programmers sang throughout, filling the sanctuary with a sense of awe and reverence.
As the evening drew to an end, students returned to the residence halls, ready to rest up for the last day of the program. Come back to the Summer Blog this afternoon to read about their final classes!
