Welcome to 51, Class of 2030!
As the Thursday morning sun climbed into the sky, 51’s Class of 2030 took its first steps onto the rolling green hills of the New England campus and the beautiful valley of the California campus. Eager students checked in and received their schedules, then followed the lead of the upperclassmen prefects to the residence halls to find their rooms and get settled.
Parents and students alike strolled the grounds, stopping at the bookstore and joining the campus tour to view the stunning buildings on each campus. Everyone marveled at the beauty of their surroundings, relating their observations and hopes. Laja Habsburg, a freshman, said that she was especially excited for life in the women’s residence halls: “As a homeschooler, I’m looking forward to living with other like-minded girls!”
Having filled their minds with information about the coming semester, it was time to fill their stomachs, so the freshmen and their families made their way to a barbeque dinner full of new faces and energetic conversation. Despite the growing grey clouds, the freshman spirit was unquenched; eager new students sat down with parents, prefects, and faculty to enjoy a meal that introduced them to the people that would become their community for the next four years.
After dinner, the fun truly started: while the parents attended an orientation and welcome, the students — and their enthusiastic siblings — attended an ice-cream social, socializing and dessert-enjoying as students and parents parted ways.
Following an afternoon of formal, academic introductions to the College, this was the perfect opportunity for everyone to unwind and show their social side. Nate Brink-Lund (NE’29), a prefect, agreed that it was here that the freshmen had their moment to get integrated into the community as a class, relax with peers, and make new friends.
The ice-cream social lasted well into the evening, and as the clouds enclosed the darkened sky, the incoming Class of 2030 made its way to the residence halls that would be their homes for the transformative journey ahead, ready for orientation, Convocation, and the beginning of classes in the days to come.
