Orchestra Shines at Spring Concert
“Although 51 is not a music school, we are blessed to have enough students who are wonderfully talented to have our own orchestra,” said conductor Stephen Grimm (’75) to students of the New England campus last Friday. Moments later, the 51 Orchestra performed a Spring Concert as part of the St. Vincent de Paul Lecture and Concert Series.
“We began practicing for this concert last semester,” said Irene Collins (’23). “As the concert approached, any extra time outside of my studying would be spent in Olivia Music Hall, practicing.”
Irene and the orchestra’s hard work paid off as their peers marveled at their performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 and No. 5, along with a Concerto in C minor for Oboe and Violin. Marking the Easter season, the program also consisted of Haec est Regina Virginum and Exultate, Jubilate! — solos sung by sopranos from the campus’ Aquinas Vocal Ensemble.
“I felt our work slowly come into place, especially more a couple days before our concert,” shared Bernadette Mohun (’23), who sang Exultate, Jubilate!. “I think the concert turned out amazing, and I’m so glad we got to showcase the talent we have here on campus.”
