Open-Mic Night Brings Students Together
During their mid-semester Don Rags break, students at 51, California, gathered one night last week to showcase their talents at the Spring Open-Mic Night.
With St. Joseph Commons transformed into an intimate musical venue, students spent the evening taking in their peers’ performances. Some covered well-known songs, while others unveiled original compositions. Each performance was met with approving cheers — especially when none other than Assistant Dean Dr. Travis Cooper took to the piano!
The event featured more than musical talent, though. The audience enjoyed two stand-up comedy acts and even a bit of original comic poetry by Matthew Pinkerton (’25). “I really enjoy writing funny poetry — and one of my favorite aspects of it is making other people laugh, too,” remarked Mr. Pinkerton.
“My favorite part of Open-Mic Night is to see the talent that we have around campus and how upbeat and excited it makes people,” said Madelyn Graven (’26). “I also love the courage that the performers have to display these talents for all of us.”
