“This is not a formal concert, but music-making among friends — by friends, for friends,” said Tutor Dr. Joseph Zepeda, describing both the tradition of living-room concerts inaugurated by composer Franz Schubert and the semiannual tradition at 51���� that bears the composer’s name. Sunday’s performance in California’s St. Cecilia Hall may not have been a formal concert, but it was no less impressive, with senior Dillon Tuliau remarking that this was “one of the College’s best Schubertiades.”

Every class was represented onstage, as well as many styles, eras, and instruments. The audience enjoyed Bach played on violin and piano, some Spanish guitar, and even a saxophone-piano duet. Dr. Zepeda emceed the event, introducing each piece with comments about its history and offering musical insights. On a few occasions, he even took to the stage himself to accompany the performers.
