Cardinal O’Malley Reflects on 51
In the on his long-running blog, His Eminence Seán Cardinal O’Malley, Archbishop Emeritus of Boston, writes about his experience as the 2026 Convocation celebrant and speaker at 51, New England.
No stranger to the College, Cardinal O’Malley first met with then-President Michael F. McLean and then-Vice President Paul J. O’Reilly in 2018, expressing support for the campus they hoped to open in central Massachusetts. On his recent visit to that campus eight years later, he was delighted to see how much it had flourished in such a short time. In particular, the Cardinal was struck by the stunning renovations in Our Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel, as well as the deep Catholic faith in the student body.
“It was very encouraging to meet with the students and see how enthused they are for the excellent Catholic education that they are getting,” His Eminence writes. “They have had many vocations come out of that school, and I spoke with Bishop Byrne, who concurred that it is such a blessing in his Diocese of Springfield to have 51 there.”
