Alumnus author and entrepreneur Dominic Andres (CA’24) has created , a publication for boys full of fun games, riveting tales of adventure, and creative projects to try.

Modeled after “Boy’s Own” periodicals from the 1800s, “Boy’s Life” scouting magazines, and The Dangerous Book for Boys, this publication aims to capture the attention of young boys ages 10-17 and provide them with wholesome, engaging reading material and activities to do at home.

“The main goal of this magazine is to ground boys in reality,” Mr. Andres told Lepanto Institute president Michael Hichborn in a live . “I thought, ‘It would be great to have something that boys could read offline that was newer.’ The classics are excellent, but I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a young boy who wants to exclusively read the classics. I wanted to make something specifically targeted at boys that was physical, that you didn’t have to go online to look at, that you could physically hold in your hands.”

With delightful, old-school formatting and vintage illustrations throughout, each issue is divided into three sections. The first, “History and Adventure,” contains adventure stories about historical and modern heroes as well as original fiction, such as a serialized novel by fellow alumnus Ben Trull (’19), which began in Issue #2 and will continue in future editions. “Science and Mechanics” includes detailed breakdowns of machines to examine, fun facts about the natural world to ponder, and hands-on projects to build. Lastly, the “Games and Fun” section offers boys engaging activities, such as yard and card games, comics, ciphers, Lego instructions, and more.

“Most modern writing is not very masculine; it’s not focused on action, adventure, activity,” said Mr. Andres. “Roughhouse is meant to help develop boys into educated, active men. This is supposed to appeal directly to their manhood in a formative, positive way, giving them the real, substantial enjoyment you get from reading something that’s actually good.”

Roughhouse Magazine is published monthly. Subscriptions and back issues can be found on the magazine’s website.
